On wooden craft, shipwrecked passengers could find safety by clinging to the wreckage, though as iron ships became popular lifejacket makers came into their own. One NZ designer - Orpheus Beaumont - created a lifejacket which was used by the British Navy. tinyurl.com/mrpbnc2s
