Today I am celebrating 7 years of sobriety. 2555 days since the fuckin insanity and things are actually pretty good right now. Much love to my friends who stay sober one day at a time. You are not alone. #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth

I always learn a lot from people in Louis Calder Center algae class, but have you ever seen anything like this homemade portable microscope by Liz Nystrom USGS NY Water Science Center? Two pieces of plywood, wide-angle lenses, and adjustable plexiglass.

Beckley Bog in northern Connecticut with John Wehr Louis Calder Center algae class for a fantastic day of collecting. Bonus for very cool pink lady's slipper, sundews, pitcher plants.

Reunion with Bruce Cahoon at Phyc. Soc. America #PSA2023 in Providence, RI. We exchanged ideas about using molecular approaches in ecophysiology experiments. Thank you to Schonna Manning and Wade Huang for putting together such a great conference! #PhycologyFriday

Dense cyanobacteria bloom in Prospect Park with diverse assemblage of potential toxin producers. The lake also has very nice specimens of Botryococcus, a member of green algae that produces oil. Check out the oil being squeezed out of the colony matrix as it compresses.

Cyanobacterial mats in the Virgin River in Zion National Park. The bright blue-green is very obvious in more stagnant parts of the river up canyon. I suspect these mats have a good source of phosphorus from the rocks. #zionnationalpark #virginriver #cyanobacteria

Lake Carmel in the Mid-Hudson Valley has another one of my favorite blooms to look at under the microscope. The species richness is quite high and includes a lot of greens and eutrophic diatoms #harmfulalgalblooms #microscope #microscopy #cyanobacteria #algae #greenalgae #diatoms
