1/ The so-called US, built on settler colonial genocide & enslaved labor, has been funding & facilitating the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza for almost 2 years now. This should be enough to destroy any investment in patriotism & nationalism.

2/ But now, during a full scale authoritarian takeover, following on the heals of years of increasing fascism, people are being disappeared & detained by the secret police, citizens are being threatened with de-naturalization, trans people are being stripped of healthcare &

3/ the ability to exist in public, poor people are having their few lifelines destroyed, the list goes on and on….

4/ If you aren’t fighting for the end of this empire, what are you doing? Today shouldn’t be a birthday party, it should be a riot & a revolution.

You may have heard that Mexico recently facilitated "the largest ancestral land restitution to date," but did you know that it was after the Wixárika led a lengthy legal battle and a cross-country march to the Presidential Palace? 1/

In April 22, 2022, "the Caravan for Wixárika Conscience and Dignity" was launched, consisting of a 1000-km march by 200 Indigenous men, women, children, & elders, demanding to meet with President López Obrador & the restitution of 11,000 hectares of their lands. 2/

32 days later, the Wixárika reached the Palace & camped outside. 3 days later, the President met with five spokespersons & signed an agreement committing to the return of their lands. 3 years later, President Claudia Sheinbaum agreed to return 56% of their ancestral lands. 3/

Wixárika community leader Oscar Hernández made it clear that they will only "claim victory the moment that they [recovered] the last hectare, the last centimeter of land" and so their anti-colonial struggle continues. I share their story for a couple reasons. 5/

First, I want to express my solidarity with Wixárika and amplify their fight for liberation. I want to emphasize that Indigenous peoples never stopped advocating for self-determination, despite the enormous cost we faced for centuries, bc the alternative is our mass death. 6/

Second, I quote the 1857 speech of formerly enslaved and abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass to remind us that "power concedes nothing without a demand." So let us be brave, steadfast, creative, selfless, & patient as we assert our demands for justice, freedom, & equality. 7/

If there was a time to rise up for Palestine, for the planet, for the poor, for the incarcerated, it is now. So let us be inspired by and love one another, as we join hands and work towards a more beautiful tomorrow.
