This is Griet Nijs, a hero. She is, with a small team if volunteers, single-handedly saving curlew in Belgium. Thank you Griet, your dedication, passion, personal sacrifice and warmth are so inspiring. Curlews still hanging there because of you. 💚💚🇫🇷

SECOND UPDATE: The Beijing police visited me today. They told me that the two poachers will serve a prison sentence of at least 37 days (the court may decide on a longer sentence but the minimum is 37). If you find illegal nets, please report them - the police will act!

Although it is unclear what it means for the birds in terms of performance, new study by Ma et al. found that levels of mercury in feathers grown at Chinese & Australian sites were higher than those from breeding grounds. Tringids using freshwater habitats had highest levels.

Three of the four curlew chicks from my earliest-ever Breckland brood are still surviving, thanks in part to the nice mix of tall and short vegetation at their breeding site. They're through the most vulnerable stage, and their chances of fledging look pretty good.

Birds or planes?
A 'win' for evidence-based conservation.
On 14 May, the Portuguese government announced that the new airport for Lisbon will be in Alochete - NOT at Montijo in the Tagus SPA.
