The rangers did their first dormouse survey of the season last week. It was too early and cool for any little dormice but the boxes are happily being used by blue tits and great tits. Many thanks to volunteers who are licensed to handle the dormice.

Looking fine and dandy on a sunny day.
Dandelions are a lifesaver for pollinators in early spring. Food for bumblebees, solitary bees, honey bees, hoverflies, beetles and butterflies! And later in the summer house sparrows and goldfinches love their seeds.

Usually small affairs like maybe a little Eccles cake, King Alfred’s Cake fungus enjoys a bit of dead ash. But this one was a whopper- at least NT scone size and maybe even the diameter of a Chorley cake! National Trust Scones

Looks like this newt we found had a perfectly damp, mossy place to hibernate over winter. On the move now to find a pond and a mate!
Question: is this a smooth newt or a palmate newt?
