We're always yold that days off school limit life chances. So why does a yr6 bright child who helps care for her mum get excluded? Because she dies her hair. Shameful.metro.co.uk/2024/09/05/gir…

We are running a project called Barriers to Education - where we are rewriting the guidance for supporting young people when they struggle to attend school. And I am running a half marathon to help make it possible: justgiving.com/page/andysg-ha…

SEND: We've been inundated with messages from mums sharing their experiences. @bbcnuala & Carolyn Atkinson are joined live by mums who say the system is failing their children. Some have no school place for their child and others have had to give up work to support them ⬇️

We ran a survey via Not Fine in School on Unauthorised absence. Summary & full report 👇. With Children's Commissioner for England finally waking up to this issue, we call on her to talk to us & Square Peg. Dame Rachel said it was a "scandal" that children missing from education were "not on anybody's radar" 41% of parents with SEN children say they have had to leave their jobs to spend time pursuing their children’s legal rights to support =CHILDREN ARE ON THEIR PARENT'S RADAR!

It was powerful to hear directly from parents, carers, and young people, including 17-year-old Katie, on BBC Woman's Hour today. Their stories highlight the urgent need to tackle the SEND crisis. We hear countless frustrating and heartbreaking experiences just like these every day

Another day, another parent receives a very serious letter in the post. Their child's school attendance level has triggered legal action under the Single Justice Procedure. The parent has to respond by telling the magistrate if they are guilty or not guilty. 1/

I find this worrying, esp for children transitioning to secondary schools. Some children are absent minded. They forget things. They are punished & feel hurt & rejected. Their first lesson is to learn not to trust. Their second is to be wary about relationships. Not a good start.

The response to this thread has been overwhelming. It should make us all stop and think. On the surface, it's an issue of how schools code pupil absences. But it's much deeper than that. It's about how a society perceives & responds to mental health. We can do so much better.

35,000 views and nobody has given an explanation as to what the problem is with the haircut Lots of “that’s what the policy says” comments but no explanation of why the policy says that If we can’t even explain the rule, why is it there and what purpose does it serve?
