A great webinar from the The Food Foundation about the National Food Strategy. A step that was much needed by the government, but just a step that requires more development and commitment at the national level.

The Government #FoodStrategy has been formally announced today, we are pleased to see that this has highlighted the need & demand for a healthy, sustainable, affordable & resilient food system. Key issues that urgently require addressing have been missed however we were happy to

see inclusion of strategies around Land Feasibility, Consultation on Local Food Procurement, Mandatory Reporting for the Environment, Animal Welfare & Horticultural Strategy for England. We strongly feel more action is needed to make any real impact on how we understand food.

Systematic change is urgently required, we need to appreciate the holistic and interconnected nature of these issues for it to be called a ‘strategy’. It is disappointing not to see a response to more of the key concerns raised by Dimbleby's National Food Strategy. At FoodSync,

we understand that production, processing, distribution & consumption require synchronisation to create real long-term positive & viable change. Covid, the war in Ukraine & the cost of living crisis has all highlighted how fragile our food systems are and that we do not have a

Plan B. The Strategy does not indicate a system focused approach, rather leaving it disjointed with lack of clear direction. We have the data on what sustainability means in the UK, Dimbleby’s report suggested making healthy food more accessible for all. The Government failed to

act on the advice instead it has shelved plans to extend free school meals to 1.5 million school children whose family are on Universal Credit. There is a feeling that the Government has finally began trying to create a coherent strategy however it lacks
