In a landmark move to combat GBV within its community and beyond, the University of Fort Hare officially opened its first-ever GBV Prevention Unit Office and launched the “Reclaiming a Safer UFH” campaign, declaring in unison that indeed: #GBVPreventionIsYourBusiness.

This historic moment re-affirms the University’s stance of zero-tolerance of GBV on campus. It also serves to honour the memories of Nosicelo Mtebeni and Siphosethu Mqombothi, two UFH female students who died at the hands of GBV.

This is a befitting honour for Prof Oelofsen who is recognized as one the key people who played an instrumental role in the strides achieved by the Unit since its inception. During her tenure, we witnessed Prof Oelofsen being at the forefront of several anti-GBV marches.

During the death of Nosicelo Mtebeni, she led a march to the East London High Court amplifying the calls for justice to prevail. Nested on the premises of the newly opened Office on the Alice campus.

The Rainbow Bench” is covered in rainbow colours signifying the “Colour” Prof Oelofsen brought to the Unit, both through the “Colour the World” anti-GBV campaign and of cause, the beautiful colourful hair she wore.
