Happy to share our paper out in Nature Communications, in which we developed a method to isolate lipid droplet associated mitochondria from liver and showed it is bioenergetically different from cytosolic mitochondria population nature.com/articles/s4146…

It is out! Here we describe a new method to isolate peridroplet mitochondria (PDM) from white adipose tissue (WAT), revealing unique functional characteristics in WAT PDM determined by lipid droplet size. life-science-alliance.org/content/7/2/e2…

The K lab had an amazing time at the 38th Annual Meeting of the Ohio Physiological Society (OPS)! 🎉 We presented posters and delivered oral talks. Huge congrats to Noble Kumar for securing one of the top 5 Blitz Talk awards! 🏆

1/ New paper alert! Excited to share our latest work on hepatic mitochondrial subpopulations and their distinct roles in MASH progression! 👉 Read here: nature.com/articles/s4200… #LiverResearch #Mitochondria #Metabolism #MASH #MASLD

2/ What did we investigate? We examined cytoplasmic mitochondria (CM) and peridroplet mitochondria (PDM) in a diet-induced MASH mouse model. As MASH progressed, we observed an inverse relationship between these two mitochondrial populations!

Karthick Chella-Krishnan, PhD (@karthick_phd) 's Twitter Profile Photo

3/ Key findings: PDMs = bioenergetic powerhouses, with higher pyruvate oxidation, TCA flux & oxidative phosphorylation protein complexes. CMs = shifted towards fatty acid oxidation, reflecting metabolic adaptation. Distinct mitochondrial functions drive MASH progression!

Karthick Chella-Krishnan, PhD (@karthick_phd) 's Twitter Profile Photo

4/ Morphological changes: Early MASH: PDMs became larger & more elongated. Advanced MASH: CMs became smaller & fragmented. 👉 This compartmentalization hints at mitochondrial specialization during metabolic stress.

5/ Why this matters: Understanding these mitochondrial dynamics offers new insights into how hepatic energy metabolism adapts (or maladapts) in MASH. Could this open doors to novel therapeutic strategies?

Excited to see my another first author publication on hepatic mitochondrial subpopulations (Peridroplet mitochondria (PDM) and Cytoplasmic mitochondria (CM) BIO COMM SEC. rdcu.be/eaoRj

we characterized the importance of hepatic PDM and CM, found that their content, dynamics, and bioenergetic capacities differentially altered from steatosis to fibrosis progression. Huge thanks to Ushodaya Mattam, our PI Karthick Chella-Krishnan, PhD  and the entire K lab team

As I’ve said multiple times , postdoc is the worst job you can have with a PhD in these times. I try hard to soften this blow for anyone in my lab and it barely scratches the surface..
