Today is World Press Freedom Day! Free, independent & pluralist media landscapes and journalists that can report in safety are crucial for the exercise of freedom of expression. 🇳🇱 supports local organisations in the KRI that aim to enhance media freedom and active citizenship.

The Kurdistan region enjoys a rich culture of coexistence among religious and ethnic components. Discussed this, and other matters with د.بشير الحداد , the Imam of Jalil Khayat Moque in Erbil.

The Dutch CG team had a fruitful visit to Sulaymaniyah. Met with the 70s commander Omar Salih and touched upon the Peshmerga reform process. Also paid a visit to an inspiring group of female Peshmerga. 🇳🇱 remains committed to Peshmerga Reform and Women, Peace & Security.

On 5 May, the Kingdom of the Netherlands celebrates Liberation Day. This year we mark 80 years of freedom since the end of WWII. At a time when peace and security cannot be taken for granted, we reflect on the value of freedom and the importance of working together to uphold it.

Last Sunday, the Dutch Consulate General in Erbil hosted the King’s Day celebration. Consul General IJsselstein underlined that King’s Day in Erbil is one moment where the friendship between the Kurdistan Region and the Dutch people “truly becomes visible.”

Inspired to receive four judges from the Kurdistan region of Iraq that will participate in the Shiraka Training Programme on Administration of Justice in the Netherlands. Best of luck!

It was a pleasure meeting colleagues from EU Member States' missions and the EU Liaison Office in Erbil on Europe Day, 9 May 2025, to mark 75 years of laying the foundations of the European venture that brought peace and prosperity to more and more European States. 🇪🇺🇪🇺🇪🇺
