We need to say! Repeat! Repeat! Disability is not a Bad Thing. Disability is not a bad word.

We need people to know disability is not a bad thing, disability is not a bad word. The use of the word, disability is acceptable and we define them as children with disabilities and persons with disabilities.

We want people to know disability is not a bad thing, disability is not a bad word. The use of the word, disability has cultural and societal biases. It brings up negative perspectives and emotions associated with stigma. We need to Erase the Stigma, Erase the negative biases!

Trained mothers of children with disabilities introduced the social model of disability . We, society, confuse disability as an individual matter – something a person “has”. This is wrong. It is the disabling barriers operating in society that disables us, not our impairments.

"People with impairments are disabled by society, so disability is therefore a social construct that can be changed and removed.

Inclusion removes the barriers in society. The question then is, Will we ever have people without disabilities? Absolutely, when we remove all barriers - society becomes enabling. We will just be people. Yes, with our impairments.

This week, Ministry of Labour and Social Protection officially launched the new Persons with Disability National Policy. This important policy will advance the rights and inclusion of people with disabilities. It will also help to identify and eliminate the barriers faced by children with #disabilities.
