India saw almost two million more deaths in 2021 (the deadliest year of the pandemic) than in the preceding few years. Abhishek Jha looked at CRS, SRS and MCCD 2021 which were released yesterday. This is 1st govt data which shows official death toll was a gross underestimate

Embarrassing to see journalists discard restraint and skepticism in a time that demands it. Jubilation at the possibility of an escalated conflict is not patriotic - it is cynicism in its worst form.

In trying to tightly control information, India is losing the one big advantage it had over Pakistan during the Kargil War: a media reporting freely from the ground in their own style, but adding credibility to official claims. Now they are no longer providing that advantage.

Delulu, dangerous, crazed. This is the news channel owned by India's largest newspaper, the Times of India. They are reporting that the Indian Army has entered Pakistan and now the Navy should come and make its contribution: "Set fire to Karachi port, burn down the whole city".

Covid took someone away from all of us. We all knew the official data didn't tell the full story. While the official toll in 2021 was 3.3 lakh, we now see that the year saw 21.3 lakh 'excess deaths' (6.4x). The undercount was severest in Gujarat & MP. livemint.com/news/india/cov…

This, the government has no problem with. Informed voices, including journalists both Indian and international, though, get blocked. Absolutely the worst thing you can do -- both in terms of commission and omission -- during a time of crisis.

India recorded over 1 crore deaths in 2021 — the second year of the COVID-19 lockdown — which was around 21 lakh deaths more than in 2020, according to two key reports on registered births and deaths published this week by the RGI after a five-year gap. thehindu.com/news/national/…

FWIW, the blocks appear to be inconsistent. Loading on some, timing out on some, and showing "blocked as per the order of ..." on some. This is not surprising, website blocking by ISPs tends to be inconsistent in India.

Amazed to see news publications reporting Mahmudabad’s comments as “anti-Operation Sindoor” when the contents of the text present all evidence to the contrary. Are reasoned appeals against war-mongering now seen as hurting national interest? m.thewire.in/article/rights…

No one can argue that Ashoka lacks consistency. In every instance that its faculty members have confronted trouble - and there have been several in the past years - it has rushed to publicly signal that they’re on their own.
