#ACL2024 was great. But very few papers were asking hard scientific questions. A lot of “LLM engineering”. In particular, university labs should really defocus on this type of engineering as industry labs, though not publishing every minute detail, are doing way more advanced

I agree with much of both @[email protected] on Mastodon’s #ACL2024 presidential talk and (((ل()(ل() 'yoav))))👾’s rejoinder, but I want to comment on just one aspect where I disagree with both: the definition and domain of CL vs NLP. 🧵👇

Instead of saying, "ACL is not X," let's frame it as: "ACL is an interdisciplinary conf. that welcomes researchers from all backgrounds. It's a space where AI and language technology intersect, fostering collaboration and innovation." This is what makes ACL unique.
