I already see a lot of tasters falling for the WYSIATI fallacy in regard to Bdx 2022. After 10 days in the region, I can assure you, there doesn’t need to be 100 point wines. Or 99, or 98, etc. Come on people. Let’s be serious, for once.

Just incredible data from a country that many thought would power the wine industry in the 21st century. Thank you @wineecon

“European Commission data for the year to June shows that wine consumption has fallen 7% in Italy, 10% in Spain, 15% in France, 22% in Germany and 34% in Portugal, while wine production across the bloc - the world's biggest wine-making area - rose 4%.” And US ⬇️ by 9%! 🚨🚨🚨

2019 Bordeaux is now available in the US. Just for fun I compared release prices (spring 2020) to approximate current market (mid w-s US retail). If you want to know why 2022 Bdx are so expensive, it's bc the Bordelais REALLY didn't want to underprice their wines again 😉

Both this and Chateau Ste Michelle's 40% reduction in grape purchasing are two sides of the same coin: recognition that sub $10/bt volumes are in (permanent?) decline and the resultant need to premiumize. winebusiness.com/news/article/2…

The slow death, by suicide, of independent wine criticism is one of the most unexpected and dispiriting legacies of the post-Parker era

What a tough spring for growers in Europe. So much rain and mildew. Even more than last year, which seemed impossible. And hail in places. Fingers crossed for a calm summer. Either way, expect another year of low yields ☹️

Wow is there a vintage more closed than 2016 Bdx? Totally and utterly locked up. Throw away the key folks, at any level, you’re going to need another ten years. We’re dealing with another 2005 here.
