I talk about business, finance, and software. I built a farm management SaaS company, Harvest Profit (acquired by John Deere in 2020). Opinions are my own.

I'm planning to build a space with 5-6 podcast/video recording studios in West Fargo (a plaza-facing space at The Lights development). I'll be using them and renting them out. As much as I love and use AI, I think there's going to be a lot of value in building relationships via

Some interesting reflecting I’ve done lately… I’ve been thinking about my time building Harvest Profit, and across nearly a decade, I don’t think I ever lost my cool with a team member. We had one employee leave who didn’t fully understand how their equity vesting worked.

There’s another wrinkle to this story. I own part of this building. Its developer, Epic Companies, imploded and disappeared. I did extensive due diligence on this project. But where I made a mistake was that I underestimated the incentive for developers to just keep doing

Today’s Nerd Out on Business company profile: Churchill Downs I had no idea they were a public company. The most interesting takeaway: More and more of their revenue can be attributed to something called Historical Racing Machines. They have a slot machine-like random

6-7 years ago, I made plenty of jabs at Farmlogs. Fast forward to today and I’m a big fan of Jesse Vollmar’s Precip app. I have about 10 locations where I’m interested in current/future/past weather and their app fits my use case perfectly. Give credit where credit is due!

Aaron Bobeck We can always grandfather free users into their free plan, if needed, and adjust pricing. But you’re spot-on with what happens when free turns to paid. I just want to build something cool that helps people. If so, I’m hopeful that some of those will reciprocate with one or

I just made an offer to buy a small business that would complement my Nerd Out product. Hopefully they accept so I can share more. Well, I guess if they don’t accept I will still share more on my logic.

Well that was fast! My offer was accepted. It was 28% below the asking price. Now I have to get in and do some due diligence. I picked a short due diligence window to increase the probability of my offer being accepted. So I’ll find out pretty soon if everything is

Early next month, I'm going to disclose the details of this acquisition and do a deep dive in a NerdOutonBusiness.com email report. Subscribe if you're interested in hearing my rationale (it's free)! Spoiler: It's a small deal that that would be doable for many people.

I had a conversation with a yesterday with friend who’s a landman in western North Dakota. He asked if I or my sister would be interested in selling our minerals. I said no. Then he asked, “I know it’s a shot in the dark but do you know these two people.” Person 1: “yes, he’s

Having fun at this place with my boys but I just can’t help myself…. “I wonder how much they rent this space for?” “Do they lease or own these machines?” I’m definitely an addict!

This was a fun company (REIT) to dig into. They got crushed during Covid even though the vast majority of their revenue comes from triple net leases. nerdoutonbusiness.com/p/the-fun-reit…

In 2026, I’m going to hire a small team of writers and researchers. I’m going to launch more free newsletters and a few free software tools. It’s going to be a fun year.
