The Economist estimates that the annual costs of Reform UK’s manifesto would be around £200bn and savings around £100bn. The gap would amount to a colossal fiscal shock, blowing up the deficit and straining the gilt market to its limit econ.st/4jGgTfP

Reform's 2024 manifesto promised huge tax cuts funded by wholly unidentified spending cuts. There is scope for a genuine small state, low tax party but cuts need to be spelled out. And not compatible with current policies against welfare cuts and for steel nationalisation.

New: The government has now been forced to reconsider its abrupt closure of a nature-friendly farming incentive scheme after a technical error left thousands of applicants in limbo⬇️

Farmers ought to be the essential element in the Government’s plans both to achieve food security and to restore and protect the environment. It is essential that Defra focuses on rebuilding trust through good-faith communications with the sector.

🚜 🧅 🐔 Could Britain run out of food? This seems a ludicrous idea. But many experts are starting to worry about the fact 38% of our food is imported. Often from drought-stressed areas like Egypt or southern Spain. Is this sustainable? And why is it getting worse? 1/2

🚜🐓 My piece for Sunday Times on why we went from only importing just 5% of our poultry meat to importing as much as 40% in just 3 or 4 years. And why is this being mirrored in other crops? thetimes.com/article/7a9c9b…

This morning's news that inflation has jumped to 3.5% – well above the 2% target – is worrying for families, and the Bank of England expect it to rise even further. We left Labour with inflation bang on target, but Labour’s economic mismanagement is pushing up the cost of living

Thank you Alistair for continuing to highlight the impact of this immoral and vindictive tax that has placed a section of our farming community in a terrible position with no ability to plan.

Chagos has been ours since 1814. It hosts a vital military base. Surrendering it to Mauritius is an act of national self-harm. It leaves us more exposed to China, and ignores the will of the Chagossian people. AND WE'RE PAYING BILLIONS TO DO SO!

This isn’t diplomacy, it’s daylight robbery. When Labour said they would increase defence spending, they did not say they would do it by paying rent on our own land to foreign governments. x.com/bbcbreaking/st…

Today at Onward we published Generation Extreme, a new briefing based on Merlin Strategy polling. It reveals striking support among young people for authoritarian ideologies and modes of governance, from net positive views of communism to backing military rule. 🧵/

Strong from Ed in here “I don’t remember a chancellor being less business growth oriented”. Not quite the message this government has been wanting to get across
