The First People's Assembly has told truth-telling hearings that redress will likely be on the table when the democratically elected voice for Indigenous people in Victoria begins negotiating a state-wide treaty with the state government this year. nit.com.au/17-04-2024/108…

The Assembly appreciates and acknowledges the extent to which the Commission has given effect to, and respected, the significance of this term throughout its inquiry.

The word “Yoorrook” pays homage to a long line of warriors, men and women, who have fought over generations against the callous, discriminatory and oppressive forces of injustices and human rights abuses against First Peoples.

In establishing the Commission, the Assembly gifted to the Commission the Wamba Wamba/Wemba Wemba word “Yoorrook” — meaning “Truth” — to represent the value of our living culture and the importance of First Peoples being at the centre of the Commission’s inquiry.

I want to thank the Yoorrook Justice Commissioners Yoorrook Justice Commission and acknowledge the important work they do.

We had the great privilege and responsibility of presenting at the Yoorrook Justice Commission today representing the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria.
