One of the coolest and most talented neuroscientists I know is starting his lab at EPFL Life Sciences next year! If you're interested in hippocampus & systems and/or are considering EPFL for grad school, check this out!

Sharp-wave ripples are the most important electrophysiological signature of memory we know about, but how do we detect them consistently across labs and species? Very happy to share our consensus statement with @Anli58219977, online at Nature Communications today! nature.com/articles/s4146…

Very honored to have been selected to give a talk at #snufa22! Lots of cool speakers + posters lined up--come through Nov 9-10 if you are interested in hearing about computing with spiking networks!

How does the hippocampus build up/replay a "clean" map of the world from corrupted experiences? Using 3 levels of modeling, we (joint w/@dhadjia1 Soltesz Lab) propose a simple, synapse-level mechanism: Hebbian plasticity of I→E synapses. Check it out! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Just a little reminder that that company that makes your scientific life hell is also doing its best to push us towards the end of all life on the planet.

Amazing work by my very talented (twitterless) colleague Jack Bowler @Losonczy_Lab! By combining (very difficult!) 2p imaging of MEC+LEC→CA1 axons with VR, Jack examines the different information conveyed from cortex→CA1 along these two streams Read here biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Yes, ChatGPT is amazing and impressive. No, OpenAI has not come close to addressing the problem of bias. Filters appear to be bypassed with simple tricks, and superficially masked. And what is lurking inside is egregious. Abeba Birhane Sam Altman tw racism, sexism.

New preprint! Why do learning and memory often involve “consolidation” between different systems in the brain? We develop a general model of systems consolidation and analyze its computational properties, esp. as compared to synaptic consolidation. (1/21) biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

All NeuroImage and NeuroImage:Reports editors have resigned over the high publication fee, and are starting a new non-profit journal imaging-neuroscience.org This comes with great regret, and a huge amount of thought and discussion- please read announcement to get more details.

Super cool work! Zena Chatila et al perform snRNA and ATAC-seq of microglia in Parkinson's patients and find ⏫proinflammatory subpopulations in SN with corresponding⏬protective and stress response subpops, correlating with degree of degeneration. Check it out!

No one is talking about how amazing Photoshop's generative AI is going to be for science. A simple "improve correlation" prompt and say goodbye to p > 0.05!

New preprint led by my very talented colleague Kevin Gonzalez (joint w @fpolleux Attila Losonczy)! Using simultaneous imaging of presynaptic glutamate and postsynaptic calcium at individual dendritic spines, we measure the BTSP plasticity kernel in vivo biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

As an animal finds its way around, the brain relies on spatial, sensory, goal-related & other inputs. Our own Attila Losonczy, along with postdoc John Bowler, traced how such info mixes in specific brain regions. Read their Neuron paper! cell.com/neuron/fulltex…
