I hear Andreessen Horowitz is calling NY Congressmembers to get them to speak out against the RAISE Act, a bill passed with an overwhelming bipartisan majority and supported by 84% of New Yorkers.

Feeling very grateful for NY Asm. Alex Bores and State Senator Andrew Gounardes leadership on AI safety right now. They’ve authored some of the most thoughtful and meaningful legislation we’ve seen on this issue—and built a broad base of bipartisan support.

Today, the working group established by Governor Newsom after the veto of SB 1047 released their final report. It underscores the urgency of California leading with a “trust but verify” approach to frontier AI governance and is filled with sharp insights. 🧵

One aspect of the AI moratorium that's largely been overlooked (including by me, until recently) is the issues it creates for the insurance industry--which is largely regulated at the state level and is usually exempt from fed reg'n unless fed law explicitly states otherwise. 🧵

People keep claiming that US states have proposed 1,000+ AI-related bills this year, but that number just doesn't hold up to analysis. A thread:

A new letter from 47 academic researchers in support of Senator Scott Wiener's SB 53 was covered this morning in Politico. It's great to see such strong support from across California for this important measure!

Senate Bill 53 has passed the California Legislature with bipartisan support. It now heads to Governor Newsom, who has until October 12th to act on the measure. He should sign it!

SB 53 is a very reasonable bill for formalizing safety framework transparency, catastrophic risk assessments, and basic incident reporting and whistleblower protections. I hope it gets signed to help anchor a future federal framework.

JUST IN: @CAGovernor Gavin Newsom signed #SB53, legislation further establishing California as a world leader in safe, secure, and trustworthy artificial intelligence — creating a new law that helps the state both boost innovation and protect public safety.
