Does anyone know of data sources with PUMA-level data to merge with the ACS? I'm looking for general features like cost of living, political affiliation, crime rate, etc. — pretty open at this point.

I've been extensively using Vincent Arel-Bundock {modelsummary} R package for both teaching and research and it is a delight. But I'm here to recommend this presentation of {marginaleffects}, a beautiful approach to interpreting model estimates: youtube.com/watch?v=ANDC_k…

The Economist just published a deeply-researched story about car bloat, and it's very, very damning: "For every life that the heaviest 1% of SUVs and trucks save, there are more than a dozen lives lost in other vehicles." Well worth your time: economist.com/interactive/un…

Two days of intense writing workshop in preparation for a special issue on ā€œsame-sex marriage and migrationā€ came to an end! Intellectually exciting conversations and a lot of fun!

Happening today: I’ll be presenting new work with Nathan Hoffmann on geographic distribution of immigrants in same-sex couples. OPR posts records on their website afterward.

We streamlined six new DID-like estimators and created this tutorial for implementation in R. yiqingxu.org/packages/fect/… Hope you no longer need to spend months figuring out what these estimators are and how to use them. w/ Ziyi Liu

This fall I'm teaching an intro stats class for graduate students in sociology, and I'm looking for a textbook. The course covers probability, sampling, and basic data analysis, barely touching on regression. Does anyone have a textbook they like? I'd love one with R examples.

New study: The relative wage premium for going to college has halved for low-income Americans since 1960. What is to blame? Rising selectivity? Tuition hikes? State disinvestment? We decompose changes in the premium since 1900 to find out. 🧵#EconTwitter nber.org/papers/w33797

When I first tried GPT3 I remember thinking writing as a skill was basically over. Now I think the opposite is true. LLMs still can’t write, everybody else’s abilities are atrophying, and being able to clearly express yourself in prose seems like it will only get more valuable

Cool paper from MIT Media Lab now showing clear proof of cognitive debt when using AI to write essays. Prior work from Vishakh Padmakumar , Max Kreminski had shown how AI assisted writing leads to homogenization. Over reliance on AI for cognitive tasks clearly has its share of harms.

wacky that ā€˜ai writing detection is impossible’ has seeped into the popular consciousness all while theres strong proof that Pangram Labs can detect it i have no financial affiliation w them, they are just 1 of 2 subs that i am actively grateful for (other one being midjourney)
