Putin is a terrorist. Why can’t Trump and Witkoff recognize this obvious fact?

Putin de facto rejects idea of 30-day Russia-Ukraine ceasefire. Instead, he proposes to begin direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul next Thursday on 15 May. “Purpose [of talks] is to eliminate the root causes of the conflict”, says Putin. By root causes RU means free Ukraine.

Back to square one. Trump abandons his own ceasefire demands without a whimper. US peace proposal presented in Paris cast aside. No hint whatsoever of pressure on Russia to soften draconian demands. Dangles a giant carrot (trade, implicitly end to sanctions) but offers no stick.

In his phone call with Trump Putin’s shown he has no interest in immediate ceasefire. Meanwhile, Trump acts like he doesn’t realize dragging this sort of conversation forever only prolongs the war and gives Russia time it so desperately needs to prepare for its summer offensive.

Trump thinks he “struck a deal” with Putin. He doesn’t realize that KGB men don’t make deals. They don’t bargain, because they don’t take steps back. For them, “negotiations” mean making the other side believe that a compromise has been reached, and that it’s time to retreat.
