Well-written piece. I would stress that the extremely early retirement ages (50, 55) are mainly applied to women. This adds another layer of inequality, compounding the existing one associated with the rural-urban divide in China. Some thoughts: niussp.org/gender-issues/…

Had a different view: In 2021-2023, Chinese immigrants caught at the *southwest* border increased by 54 times (450 to 24314). Indians by 16 times (2588 to 41770). Not sure why Canadians, but their numbers increased from 76 to 100. In 2024, thus far 15038 Chinese and 9546 Indian.

In the name of protecting research security, the U.S. government has created a law enforcement architecture grounded in exclusion and fear, mirroring the very authoritarian society we are trying to compete with. My latest piece in The Hill: thehill.com/opinion/educat…

The The New Yorker writer Peter Hessler joins me this week on the Sinica Podcast to talk about his outstanding new book, out July 9, "Other Rivers: A Chinese Education." A phenomenal longitudinal cohort study rendered in Hessler's gorgeous prose. Link in replies below.
