North News is attending tonight's MPS Board Meeting. As part of tonight's agenda, the MPS Board of Directors is discussing — and voting — on the district's 2018 - 2019 budget. Other agenda items include items on the district's equity & diversity assessment efforts.

Director Gagnon is offering a referendum which would restore time-allotted funding (moving schools back to a 7-period day with that funding (previously proposed cuts) being instead taken from the Davis Center. Superintendent Graff is responding to that proposed referendum now.

Community members are chanting 'let them speak,' - according to Director Inz, there are approximately 25 more people signed up to speak, but Inz is calling for a roll call to go to recess and then move on to the next part of the meeting. Recess has been called.

A North Minneapolis student from Southwest High School is asking that the district consider renovating the hockey ring by Patrick Henry to a roller skating rink as a community-building and resource-building activity.

'As you can see there are a lot of people who care very deeply and will continue to care when November comes,' says one South High School student.

Many individuals are asking that the district shift its cuts to the Davis Center and administrative pay, SRO program, and standardized testing. MPS has stated in the past that the Davis Center will be undergoing both cuts and pauses in funding.

Many community members are advocating for a one-year bridge budget, rather than the more drastic cuts proposed by the MPS Board.
