Zambia, a country of around 20 million people, has fewer than 10 cardiac specialists in both the government & private sector. National Heart Hospital began performing cardiac surgeries in September 2021. The University of Michigan team worked with NHH's chief of cardiothoracic surgery Chileshe Mutema, MD.

“Performing this case with U-M showed us what is possible and that the capacity to do complex cases comes with a knowledgeable, experienced and well-organized team with each team member doing their best,” Mutema said. "It was a historical moment."

It was a pleasure to be back in Zambia for our 3rd annual mission and teach more complex valve surgery including the first mitral repair at National Heart Hospital and perhaps in Zambia! The local team every year makes incredible progress to help the citizens of Zambia.

In collaboration w/Chileshe Mutema, MD's team, they performed 7 cases in 5 days, including the hospital’s first mitral valve repairs. A major focus of the trip was ensuring the team would be able to perform such operations in the future to increase capacity & access for patients in Zambia.
