We need mirrors in our books. Our students don’t see themselves in the “classics.” We need to move away from what we’ve always taught to using books that engage readers. Diverse books should be filling the shelves of our classroom libraries.

Thank you Shele Banford for modeling a focus lesson for us, breaking down the moves educators must make when planning for workshop! Check out that unit projection calendar, too ;)! Lots of hard work and thought by the 7th grade Literacy team at Poe Middle School!! @Meg_Lister FCPS Region 2

Conferring as formative assessment - it’s the highest form of differentiation. Why confer? It develops relationships with students. It informs instruction and because each student is a different kind of reader and writer. FCPS Office of School Support Jennifer Sweda FCPS Secondary Literacy

“We are on the brink of the golden age in education.” Utilizing workshop as a structure allows us to move closer to gold using the three tenets discussed in this article. ascd.org/publications/e…

Hearing misconceptions about workshop. If you start teaching & after a bit say-we are moving into workshop time-or are trying to ‘fit in’ workshop, let’s clear up the misunderstanding. Workshop is the structure. Minute kids walk in, they are in the workshop.

“So is it OK if a kid only wants to read graphic novels? Experts say yes. Research found that GN averaged 53.5 rare, or more complex, words per 1,000. That's more than children's books which average 30.9 and even adult books at 52.7.” parents.com/kids/education…

Writing about our experiences allows us to understand the world around us and ourselves more deeply. Sharing our writing and reading that of others allows us to connect more deeply. If not now, when? FCPS MS ELA

Yes! We don’t need the powerpoints and peardecks. Or grammar activities or prompts. Kids need choice & time. Short focus lesson, indep writing time, conferences, chances to talk w/ a partner. It doesn’t need to look different. FCPS Region5 FCPS MS ELA FCPS Elem Literacy
