Ukraine has never been shortlisted before for #InternationalFeature despite one incredible film after another like #Atlantis, #BadRoads, #Klondike and #Donbass. #20DaysInMariupol is their first ever shortlisted film.

It is a great honor for us to represent Ukraine at the Oscars ceremony. This statuette, this victory is for Ukrainians, for the people of Mariupol. I’m thankful to everyone who defends our country and fights for our freedom.

I wish I’d never made this film. I wish I’d been able to exchange this for Russia never attacking Ukraine, never occupying our cities, never killing tens of thousands of my fellow Ukrainians. But I cannot change the history. I cannot change the past. But we all together can

2 years ago, the world watched in horror as photographs, videos, and testimonies emerged from Bucha, a town occupied for a month by Russian forces. When they withdrew, they left behind hundreds of murdered civilians and thousands of survivors forever marked by the experience.

#20DaysInMariupol was shown at European Parliament It’s important to show footage of these real events, so that they don’t occur again. It’s even more important to show them, so someone does something to put an end to them.
