MS-SMART has started and recruitment into the trial will continue through 2015. UCL centre is currently open!

MS-SMART is testing 3 drugs (riluzole, amiloride and fluoxetine) in people with SPMS.

MAIN criteria:SPMS,not on DMT,not taking a SSRI,still able to walk 20 metres(with 2 crutches)or up to 500 metres without help,aged 25-65

There are currently no treatments that can slow or stop the accumulation of disability in progressive MS: we need to change this urgently.

Riluzole, amiloride and fluoxetine were identified after a systematic review of published research of potentially neuroprotective treatments

Fluoxetine, riluzole and amiloride have shown promise in early phase human MS clinical trials.

Fluoxetine, riluzole and amiloride target one or more of the pivotal neurodegenerative causing pathways implicated in SPMS

The duration of the MS-SMART trial for a trial participant is 96 weeks.
