The Fault in Our Stars has been removed from the YA section in the suburbs of Indianapolis and is now considered a "book for adults." This is ludicrous. It is about teenagers and I wrote it for teenagers. Teenagers are not harmed by reading TFIOS. This is such an embarrassment

John Green, Elizabeth Acevedo, and Nic Stone are among many NYT best selling authors who will now have their YA books removed from the teen section of the library and placed into the adult section in our community.

Let’s not forget all of the NYT bestselling BIPOC authors, like Nic Stone, Elizabeth Acevedo, etc. who also had books removed from HEPL. In 2022, the Poetry Foundation named Acevedo the Young People's Poet Laureate. She poured into HSE HS students when she visited Indiana.

No one should hinder one’s freedom to read. If you have concerns w/ a text, it’s simple-don’t read it! Leave the book on the shelf and move along. Don’t impose your beliefs onto everyone else or erase the stories and work of authors who don’t align w/ your views.

This is an appropriate issue to address. The new HSE superintendent and the school board should give a response. While it’s a given that “we” all want “continued” academic excellence for our school district, having diverse administrators and teachers help us maintain excellence.

I, too, learned about Ramadan as an adult. Let’s help kids feel seen and valued and also build empathy by sharing picture books that help us learn more about experiences different from our own. #culturallyInclusive #representation
