Do you use the term SALC or LGO when drawing a molecular orbital diagram? I say SALC because then I feel more comfortable applying symmetry labels to methane and other non-metallic molecules where the word ligand feels ambiguous. Want to hear other opinions!

A new challenge: these shiny brown/blue crystals grew embedded in a pale-green glass. After testing the glass for diffraction, I had to very carefully separate the crystals into single plates - and then run them encased in the glass! At least it was visibly obvious.

I've started a dream postdoc in an exciting lab on a breathtaking campus. Still in utter and complete awe of everything (but especially syringe pumps, near-silent vacuum and the French Alps)

Feels like we are due for a ribbon-cutting ceremony..

We started dreaming of it last year, waited eagerly for nine months, now it's here. 4 port, 310 kg, -40 freezer and programmable regen. Delivery was smooth and everyone is healthy and happy.
