The Stone Tape (working title: Breakthrough), was commissioned by Christopher Morahan in his capacity as the BBC's Head of Plays. He'd worked with Kneale before, having directed The Road in 1963 and a remake of Kneale's adaptation of Nineteen Eighty-Four in 1965. #stonetapelive

A remake of The Stone Tape for BBC2 was planned in 2012, to be written by Matthew Graham (Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes) and directed by Peter Strickland (Berberian Sound Studio, In Fabric, Flux Gourmet). #stonetapelive

The projected TV remake of The Stone Tape fell apart, but re-emerged in revised form as a BBC Radio 4 version by Graham and Strickland in October 2015. Jane Asher made a cameo appearance as the mother of Jill Greeley, the character she'd played in the original. #stonetapelive
