Hello - I wrote a new blog about the teaching of whole class reading, which I haven't in a while. It's over 9000 words so quite a read, but I hope the comprehensive nature of it comes across as helpful, rather than patronising. Anyway - hope it's useful! mrboothy6.wordpress.com/2025/01/03/who…

I strongly suspect that the approach to reading lessons that Ashley describes in this blog is significantly more effective and more engaging than the approaches currently used in the vast majority of English schools. Well worth a read.

Apparently there could be a cabinet reshuffle, seeing us with a new education secretary. I've been teaching just over a decade and in that time there have been 11 of them. 11. That's absurd. No one can get anything done. Although, does include this woman who did it for 35 hours.

I am still on the hunt for any great Year 6 appropriate books that do not feature any family death, especially parental. Please help a guy out - even if it's to plug your own book!

Predictions for the reading paper: A tepid non-fiction text called 'The Illustrious History Of Whisks' A poem filled with inaccessible language called 'A Consideration Of Mild Weather' An extract from the most boring children's book imaginable, called 'Colin Waits For The Bus'

If I have two black eyes tomorrow it’s absolutely for heroically rescuing an old person from a street mugging and NOT because a ten-year-old girl absolutely wellied a tennis ball right between my eyes during rounders. Just clearing that rumour up right now.

Year 6 have 2 maths tests on a Wednesday. If one of the tests is 30 minutes and the other is 40 minutes and the marks are out of 40 and 35, then how many glasses of Cabernet Sauvignon does the teacher need to reach greater depth in relaxation? Show your working.

One of the biggest Eurovision injustices of all time is that we didn't send Darius Danesh (RIP) with Colourblind. We'd have absolutely walked it.

Mad that it’s five years since I used to receive messages like this on Seesaw from Year 6 children. A different world.

This was my personal favourite part of the KS2 reading SAT. A true testament to the effort, editing and thought that goes into the assessments.
