A remarkable graph, very encouraging for Classics, showing the strongest growth in A-level entries after Maths, Physics and Computer Science; pleasant to see good growth in Modern Languages, too, but rather more worrying with History. From here: ffteducationdatalab.org.uk/2024/08/five-t…

Having a new term clear out and have two boxes of various Classics books for anyone interested in picking them up from Hamilton. Might be useful for some BGE Classics or Advanced Higher dissertations.

In advance of my going to see Ridley Scott's latest offering for a second time tomorrow, thought I'd share this episode I got to do on the real Macrinus. It was great fun to share the mic with my great friend and colleague, Matilda Brown. open.spotify.com/episode/0XA3Mq…

Thinking about teaching Roman Religion and Belief for Higher Classical Studies? This book is a must for familiarising yourself with Roman worship and their religious practices. It’s very accessible and provides useful examples of belief in practice in the ancient Roman world.

The question is not whether we can afford to teach Latin, or Greek, or music, or visual arts, and so on; it is whether we can afford not to. ✍️ for the The Telegraph telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/12/2…

Received word today that my MPhil thesis on Horace’s Epodes has been accepted and passed by the examiners. 39,500 words on Horace’s refashioning of iambos. Special thanks to my supervisors Costas and Andrew. Looking forward to graduating from University of Glasgow again in the summer.

Inspired by the generous example of Antigone Journal, here is a summary of Greek syntax rules in 3 pages with a list of illustrative examples in verse at the end. Used by generations of Eton schoolboys up to the 1970s, and still worth using as a basis.

Not sure how many folks still use this platform, but I hope you will share notice of a new scheme designed to spur interest in Classics in the state sector, with help from friends at Glasgow Academy. Places in N5 Latin, Higher and Adv Higher Classical Studies classes available!
