Anti-statist individualism is a product of modern bureaucracy. It’s only when bureaucracy allows you to move around freely and anonymously that (in ignorance of the facilitating work of bureaucrats) you can come to think of yourself free of ties to society and government.

If you think of the entire nexus of libertarian / anarchist / individualist ‘thought’ as generalized political anxiety it makes much more sense.
