I hope people trying to figure out why tutoring isn't working well at scale won't do another 7000 kid study. This is one of those times where small qualitative studies could be more informative. hechingerreport.org/proof-points-t…

A big thing recent ai developments have made clear is that intelligence is not a one-dimensional property you can sum up with a single number. It’s many different cognitive capacities, and there’s no reason for an entity that’s smart on one dimension needs to be smart on others.

I'm sitting next to a Lincoln impersonator at the airport bar. He's watching MSNBC reporting on yesterday's assassination attempt. This is easily the most surreal thing I've ever witnessed.

When the "culture" imagines great teachers, they imagine people who go the extra mile for the toughest kids. Not discounting that, but I think more often great teaching looks closer to flexibility. Like someone who can do normal teacher things in a huge variety of situations.

Do you read books of poetry in order? How many poems do you read in one sitting? Do you stop and think about each poem? (I typically need a break after reading 3-5, but I sorta bounce around until finding one that I want to read carefully. Is this weird?)

One of the neat things about wandering around the YIVO is the stuff you find in archivists’ offices. This is a cigar box of fake stamps for forging documents that belonged to the Bundist underground in France during WWII.
