Quite a bit has been made about the performances in Netflix's Ripley.
Hands-down, the best performance was given by this dude. This cat is a real scene-stealer.

Eleanor Coppola dead at the age of 87. It's not hyperbole to say that her 1991 documentary film, Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse had a massive impact on the enduring legacy of Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now.

Look, edgarwright's new version of The Running Man might turn out to be a masterpiece, but I don't think it'll have a character who looks like this. If it does, then I'm blockbooking seats immediately.

I will defend any film where Doug McClure discovers something lost or forgotten. Be that a land, a people, a civilisation or... a wallet.

Shouldn't these Turtles be middle-aged? They've been passing themselves off as teenagers since 1984. It's getting creepy now.

Sam Raimi's Crimewave - it doesn't always work, but you can't deny its energy. Written by Raimi & the Coens, it mixes slapstick, noir & horror. The set design, camera work & editing are first rate. Funny, nasty, dark & silly - it covers a lot of ground. Possibly Raimi's best pic.

They shouldn't have released Peter Hyams' adaptation of Ray Bradbury's A Sound of Thunder. Franchise Pictures went bankrupt & there wasn't enough money to complete visual effects. When I say they look terrible, I mean it! A shame. There's probably a good movie in there. Maybe.

Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom - a delight. It's a crisp & clean comedy which is as heartfelt as it is funny. It features fantastic performances from a wonderful cast. Bruce Willis delivers in a role that has real depth - there's inner-strength & emotional frailty in his turn.

Jonathan Demme was a great director, but remember that time he had the wacky idea of remaking a great Cary Grant film (Charade), deciding to cast Mark Wahlberg - and then making him wear a selection of funny hats?

I give you...The Truth About Charlie.

I'm glad that Hulk exists - simply for the Ang Lee interview feature in Empire Magazine at the time of its release that had the headline -
'You wouldn't like me when I'm Ang Lee'.

Todd Phillips' Joker - At the centre is Joaquin Phoenix’s powerful turn - an actor who isn’t afraid to go to dark places. It riffs on Alan Moore’s seminal graphic novel, The Killing Joke but it’s very much its own thing. Not the masterpiece some say, but still essential viewing.

Thinking about how, in 2009, we almost got a Nicolas Cage movie directed by John Carpenter (Riot aka Scared Straight!).

Renny Harlin's Cutthroat Island - infamous because it was a huge bomb: $98m budget v $10m gross (ouch!). Flimsy plot & silly dialogue - but it looks stunning. Minimal CGI, great sets & practical set pieces make it a must for those seeking a tangible action movie.
Loud, dumb fun!

The Borderlands came & went in the wake of the found-footage phenomenon. It was lumped in with lesser films permeating the horror scene in 2013. It was a cut above the rest & it now gets a sparkly Blu-ray release by Second Sight

S. Craig Zahler is one of the finest filmmakers to emerge in the last decade or so. It’s criminal that he hasn’t made a film since 2018's Dragged Across Concrete.
Good news:
Zahler is now set to direct cime noir, The Big Stone Grid.
