Today we remember the USS Ward which, patrolling the entrance to Pearl Harbor, Dec 7, 1941, sunk a Japanese midget sub, inflicting the first American-caused casualties in the Pacific. Named in honor of Cdr. James Harmon Ward, the first US Naval Officer killed in the Civil War.
