Archaeology at Monticello reconstructed these two mugs from broken sherds found during the 1980s excavations in the Dry Well. Made between 1720-1805 in Staffordshire, England and then imported to the colonies, the vessels were likely used as chocolate mugs. ☕ ❄️

Like other enslaved field laborers at Monticello, Minerva Granger and the details of her life were left out of the documentary record. As a result, we use archaeology to learn more about the individuals who labored on Jefferson's 5,000-acre plantation: bit.ly/3UFNWqS
