A massive clear air bolt strikes below sea level in Badwater Basin as a rare, summer thunderstorm tracks through Death Valley. One of the most spectacular weather events I’ve ever experienced!

Really fascinating flight into #Gabrielle. We witnessed a quick eyewall replacement cycle known as an eyewall merger (Michael Fischer had a paper about this in Irma) and saw some really strong winds on the east side. Very nice dataset with coordination between the two

From before #Imelda was even an invest last Thursday, Google DeepMind's tropical-tuned FNV3 ensemble mean was showing the out-to-sea scenario. At its closest US approach, the model kept Imelda some 211km off the coast of South Carolina.
