Maarten Bullens, emergency nurse team leader in #Abyei Special Administrative Area in #SouthSudan🇸🇸 shares how seeking care can sometimes involve great sacrifices for families, especially in conflict-affected areas & people have limited access to care. bit.ly/3GHTUQa

Maarten joined the team in #Abyei to assist people who have taken refuge in informal camps or with local communities. This is how he met 7-year-old Hoth, who contracted #malaria at age two, leaving him with irreversible brain damage. He no longer recognises his family members.

Hoth had burnt his left arm & chest. His arm is now infected & he has lost the use of his hand. But because there is no hospital available in the area, the nearest being the one we support in #Abyei, he has only been able to receive traditional medicine, which has not healed him.

Outbreaks of violence and the rainy season leave roads muddy, becoming an uphill task for MSF teams to reach people in the #Abyei Special Administrative Area, making it even harder for communities to access healthcare. bit.ly/3GHTUQa
