Maarten joined the team in #Abyei to assist people who have taken refuge in informal camps or with local communities. This is how he met 7-year-old Hoth, who contracted #malaria at age two, leaving him with irreversible brain damage. He no longer recognises his family members.

Hoth had burnt his left arm & chest. His arm is now infected & he has lost the use of his hand. But because there is no hospital available in the area, the nearest being the one we support in #Abyei, he has only been able to receive traditional medicine, which has not healed him.

Outbreaks of violence and the rainy season leave roads muddy, becoming an uphill task for MSF teams to reach people in the #Abyei Special Administrative Area, making it even harder for communities to access healthcare. bit.ly/3GHTUQa

"The situation is complex, as we did not come to Agok to evacuate or transport patients, but to assess the health situation there. Nevertheless, I am touched by the distress of this family and as a health worker, I cannot leave a patient."-Maarten Bullens

#Repost More images from the weekend. Photo|Frome Day Two of the Symposium was as thought-provoking and inspiring as Day One. As a reminder, it explored the festival's theme, 'Decolonising Environments'. Photos by joaophotography_street instagram.com/p/CuPigjcI2cr/…

This reflects the complex and often conflicting relationships between human communities, places, and the natural world. The inspirational Giles Duley, Jenny Matthews, Mohini Chandra, and Christina Simons Christina Simons all added hugely to the richness of the conversation.

Our one story became two when Natasha Frost shared what it was like reporting in a language she does not speak. I loved working on this story with Natasha and Maud Bodoukian bit.ly/Nytimes-Report…
