Milicent Bagot was the first woman to reach senior rank in MI5, in a career that spanned 40yrs. In 1953, Bagot was promoted to assistant director of MI5. She took charge of a whole section in the overseas branch of the Security Service and was described as a tenacious officer.

Memorial to Edith Cavell, near Trafalgar Square, London. Cavell ran a clandestine organisation that aided British and French POWs to escape from Belgium in the First World War. She gathered intelligence for the Allies and was arrested by the Germans in October 1915.
