I have an article in the Autumn 2024 issue of Arts of Asia ‘Pictures of One Hundred Beauties: A Set of Cigarette Cards from the Chinese Republican Era’. Please read if you have time! There are 30 cards & I’ll post one every day. Plenty to read on ceramics too! Louise Edwards

Chinese letter writer. Notice that the Chinese characters are made up by the artist, similar practice seen from other artists drawing China around that time. Cigarette card, from W. Duke Sons & Co. in 1889.

The famous Shanghai-style ("Haipai") advertisement poster designs became popular across South-East Asia during the 1930s. This one for the Medical Office in Singapore was created by China's most acclaimed commercial artist Hang Zhiying.
