’Shopping’ in Luleå, Sweden, last week — the first purpose built indoor shopping centre. Opened in 1955, it was designed by Ralph Erskine. Much has changed but the labyrinthine interior remains.

When constructing the popular dry ski slope from waste land in east London (early 1980s), according to Mark Hobbs, soil was taken from the construction of the basement levels of the British Library’s new building to resurface and sculpt the waste heap.
