Smoke alarms expire. All smoke alarms should be replaced after 10 years. "Long-life” alarms with non-replaceable batteries should be replaced when it starts chirping or after 10 years. If a smoke alarm doesn’t work when you test it, replace it immediately! #FirePreventionWeek

Cooking a turkey for Thanksgiving? Make sure you give your bird enough time to thaw, especially if you’re planning to deep-fry. Depending on size and method, it can take multiple days to thaw, so plan ahead! Otherwise, you risk a holiday disaster and dangerous grease fire.

The weather outside is frightful — and a Christmas tree on fire is not so delightful. Keep your tree watered, don’t put candles on or near your tree, turn off lights before leaving or going to bed, and be careful around fireplaces, space heaters and other heat sources.

Merry Christmas and Happy Hannukah! Whether you’re lighting the menorah, or other festive candles, don’t let the flames get out of control. Never leave candles unattended, keep lit candles, lighters and matches away from children and pets, and keep decorations away.

When seconds count, access to fire hydrants can save lives and property. If there’s snow in your area, please take a few minutes to shovel a 3-foot path around hydrants near your home or business. Be a hydrant hero. Shovel. Clear. Save time. Save lives.

When you turned your clocks ahead this weekend, did you remember to change your smoke and CO alarm batteries? And don’t forget to test your alarms once a month to make sure they work during an emergency.

It’s Arson Awareness Week. This year’s focus: preventing fires in wildfire-prone areas. As the weather warms up, so does the risk of wildfires. Pay attention to red-flag warnings, avoid burning on windy days and talk to kids about fire safety. We can prevent wildfires together.
