An incredibly awful security vulnerability just got revealed in MongoDB. So much that it got named after HeartBleed. MongoBleed is a vulnerability affecting all MongoDB versions from 2017 to... today. The exploit is simple. It's a buffer over read bug due to compression.

AI has dramatically accelerated how software is written. But speed was never the real bottleneck. Despite LLMs, The Mythical Man-Month is still surprisingly relevant. Not because of how code is produced, but because of what actually slows software down: coordination, shared

In my experience LLMs are bad for code optimization. When I am using LLMs, I let the LLM write the boilerplate code and then I rewrite the perf critical parts such as inner loops. You have to understand performance to instruct LLM to write performant code for you. Super strict

A lot of people are feeling this way, and it really is because their identity is tried to tools and process, and not to the outcomes. I was never a good programmer. I failed my CS courses multiple times & ultimately got the bare minimum passing grade. I don't do software design

Fun fact: There's an MMO game on Steam with over 100,000 purchases that, if played, can allow any other player in the game world to gain remote access to your computer. The devs are aware of the vulnerability and actively trying to hide it. Steam was notified and did nothing.

AI can make work faster, but a fear is that relying on it may make it harder to learn new skills on the job. We ran an experiment with software engineers to learn more. Coding with AI led to a decrease in mastery—but this depended on how people used it. anthropic.com/research/AI-as…

Genie is definitely doing something fancy. But if we look at it from the perspective of generating games, this path seems close, yet it’s actually very far. Games are fundamentally different from video, and there are a few hard hurdles you can’t avoid. 1. Long term consistency
