The curious coach can outgun the insistent one! Sure, there's a time to instruct - to use your expertise in an overt, explicit fashion that gets a player taking action right away. But often a step back, a pause for thought, a question to elicit an answer That's coaching!

It seems strange that this still need clarifying but: Ecological Dynamics isn't a tool to be picked up and used when you deem appropriate. It's a lens through which perception and motor learning can be viewed. That lens informs which tools are, or are not, appropriate.

So I recently came across this very clever kid called Danny Hatcher, who kindly spent a couple of hours of his time thoroughly out-geeking me on the subject of ecological dynamics.

I look forward to a day where IG is full of 'my games are better than your games'. At present, it's just, 'my techniques are better than yours!'.

This then shapes what we think is good training of skills. Every action we do is always part of a perception-action loop, and it’s the loop that must be practiced. So ecological coaching aims to allow repetition of the loop

We don't allow head contact for our U18s. That means they can learn/develop entirely through sparring & live games. Hopefully when they're adults & ready (want to) to level up. They'll have a foundation to build upon & respect for 🧠 health. For now, they just have fun scrappin.

Many who view striking through an aesthetical lens are befuddled how Sean managed to fight so effectively against Izzy. Those who look through the lens of relational perception-action coupling won't be so surprised. Great job champ!

Thanks to Scott Scott.PrimalMKE for facilitating this discussion. I think we did a reasonable job of understanding skill transfer in combat sports and why a lot of the gimmicks you see online are exactly that! Feedback welcome 💪🏼
