So, a five minute slot in a year 11 assembly to advertise languages at A Level has got me thinking about how best to catch and retain interest. What would you add to this PowerPoint? I'll add any suggestions and share the final product. It works for GCSE too! #mfltwitterati

School French can be your introduction to Romanian & Catalan. Spanish might inspire you to learn Portuguese or Italian. German could draw you into Icelandic, Dutch, Danish or even Old English. A language goes way beyond one subject in school. It's your passport to the world.

Why learn languages? Because communication changes everything. Because languages foster empathy & respect for others. Because one language leads to another. Because there's a world beyond your own. Because everyone benefits from another language. Because it's joyful. That's why.

Don't worry if your verb is not quite in the right place or your masculine should be neuter or numbers above 5 take the wrong case or your tones need some honing. You'll still be understood. Learning languages starts with communication & connection, not precision & perfection.

Another language can boost your earning potential, but it will definitely open up a new world, change your outlook, insights & perceptions, introduce you to new people & cultures, make you better at what you love & hone your interpersonal skills. Languages offer you so much more.

Languages are about communication, understanding & shared humanity. With nearly 7,000 languages in the world, there’s one for you. You don’t have to be good at languages & it’s okay to get things wrong. Learn from your mistakes, express yourself & make your world a little bigger.

Why do languages matter? They intensify your appreciation of music, film, sports, food, books, dance, art & much more. They connect you with new people & perspectives. They make life richer, more colourful & more meaningful. They overcome differences. That's why languages matter.

Love this! "I wasn't the best at school, but in Spanish, I gave 100% because I had this dream of playing for Real Madrid... I'm not afraid to speak and make mistakes." 🇪🇸

I’m often asked, why learn another language when everyone speaks English? I reply, there are billions of people who don’t speak English & even if they do, their hearts & minds are in their own languages. You will find that connecting with hearts & minds takes you so much further.

Why learn a language? I learn languages to see life through other people's eyes, to discover diversity in the world. Languages are about understanding other ways of thinking & making new connections that cut across any subject & every area of life. Languages make a difference.

I learn languages because I want to see the world through other people's eyes, enjoy foreign experiences to the fullest, be open to different attitudes & thinking, explore a whole world of people & cultures. There are so many reasons why learning a language transforms your world.

German is the most spoken native language in the EU, Spanish is the 2nd most spoken native language in the world & French is spoken across 5 continents. That's why the language you learn in school is your key to new horizons, new connections & new opportunities, whoever you are.

European Day of Languages is a celebration of connection. Spanish, Portuguese & French link Europe to Latin America & Africa. Greek & Italian connect you with Europe's past & future. Any language you learn is a new series of connections. Today's a great day to start learning!

There's something immensely satisfying about learning another language. It's realising that you can use a language that isn't your own. You can communicate, even if you make mistakes. You can experience the world to the fullest. You can stand out. You can, with another language.
