It's official – SOHO_Mission has hit 5000 comets! ☄️ Spotted on 25 March by citizen scientist and seasoned comet hunter Hanjie Tan, this rare 'Marsden group' comet is extremely small and faint. See the comet next to the Sun 👉 esa.int/ESA_Multimedia…

🌞 🌚 🌎 The ESA/NASA SOHO mission observed its 5000th comet ☄️ - found by a member of the public through the Karl Battams project! The instrument used was LASCO, which creates an artificial eclipse in space! Dr. Karl Battams leads the project. 🥳 👏 go.nasa.gov/4cwGWmu

☄️Comet alert! For the next few days, SOHO_Mission will be watching Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS), expected to be one of the brightest comets it's ever seen. Teaser first image below, check the right edge! 📷ESA/NASA SOHO (☀️centre, Mercury on the left)

Aaaand.. Action! ☀️ In the last 24 hours, the Sun sent out two X-class solar flares and SOHO_Mission witnessed the two associated coronal mass ejections – those big white “puffs” seen here. And that big white streak on the right? That’s Comet A3 entering the scene ☄️ 🎥ESA/NASA

Comet C/2023 A3’s brightness is ‘off the charts’ today, partially saturating SOHO_Mission’s detectors! 😎 ✨Those sparkles in the image are solar energetic particles, as the Sun is still bursting with activity 📷ESA/NASA SOHO
