Our first graders in #CKLA have been learning about space. Over the past few weeks we have been participating as mathstrnauts, traveling through space, completing math missions. We have officially completed our training and had a great time doing it!! #WErTJ McClellan Elementary

We are so excited that first grade is starting a sensory garden at McClellan Elementary Our first lesson talked about what plants need to grow and what they give us. We planted our first seeds for the garden. Marigolds, two different cherry tomatoes, herbs, and strawberries! #WErTJ

Another step forward in our sensory garden project thanks to West Jefferson Hills SD Educational Foundation! We were able to build raised beds from recycled cedar untreated telephone poles. Thank you to Lonely Oaks Timber Sawmill for the wood! I can’t wait for our students to see. ☺️ #WErTJ

With Earth Day coming up, we learned about the importance of birds in our environment. They disperse seeds, are pollinators, and so much more! We also learned what we can do to help birds in return. Materials such as yarn, string, or hair can help them build their nests! #WErTJ

Planting for the pollinators!🌻🐝🦋 Students learned about the decline in bird’s habitats and how planting native plants can help give them new homes and food. We planted pollinator friendly and native plants after learning about a pollinator bird, the hummingbird. #WErTJ

During Read Across America Week our class worked so hard on making our very own book! They researched their own zoo animal for our story. Today we celebrated with a Publishing Party. Thanks #Studentreasures for publishing our book! #WErTJ

Today was the day, our first transferring! We moved some of our plants outside. The tomatoes, marigolds, strawberries, lemon balm, and chives. Let’s keep hoping for warmer weather! 🤞🏻☺️ #WErTJ McClellan Elementary

We read a few haunted house books to think about what we would smell, see, hear, and feel at a haunted house. What detailed results they came up with!

Today in Room 105 we kicked off Holidays Around the World! We started in India! Diwali is celebrated for five days and those who celebrate decorate their homes with clay candles called diyas. After learning all about Diwali, we made our own version of diyas!

This week students in Room 105 went to China to celebrate the Chinese New Year! We learned about the Legend of Nian and the symbolism of red and gold. Red is happiness and gold is good luck. We loved making our own New Year dragons!

The traveling hasn’t stopped! We went to Russia and Sweden. Tomten, the gift giver in Sweden, is left porridge instead of cookies. In Russia, Matryoshka dolls are color gifts and accent pieces used during the holidays. Did you know Christmas is celebrated on Jan. 7th in Russia?
