The DfE have called 2025-26 a ‘Year of Reading’. We welcome this brilliant initiative, but at Carlton Academy Trust, we have a head-start. This has been a huge year for our secondary schools where we have revolutionised our reading program. We are delighted to share our impact 👇

4/ Over the last couple of weeks we’ve been running our end of year data collection. We use the reading test from Bedrock Learning. The headlines are fantastic - here is the Trust-wide data across our three mainstream secondaries Carlton Bolling CarltonKeighley Oulton Academy

5/… Carlton students make more than twice expected progress. Students with the biggest barriers who need the most, get the most and improve the most. In our largest school, students who started the year illiterate have made almost 30 months progress in 10 months on average.

6/ We have significantly increased the number of students who max out the test - this will have a massive impact on their ability to access texts in their GCSE exams, where many texts are at a 15 or 16 reading level… in one of our schools, this number has doubled!

Please indulge me for 2 minutes while I brag about our amazing team. I have the absolute privilege of leading literacy at Carlton Academy Trust. This first year of our reading program has been a corker. The impact is incredible, and I am honestly just so proud of everyone ❤️…
