Natalie Grace Wives of child sexual abuse offenders are often unfairly blamed for failing to meet their husband’s needs. Any form of blame-shifting offers perpetrators yet another way to deflect responsibility and elicit sympathy from those who struggle to believe they committed sexual abuse.

Rest in peace, beautiful one. You deserve your peace, always have. May your memory continue to inspire us as your life did. A hero. Gone but not forgotten.

Robert Downen Thank you for your reporting. It’s rarely, if ever, just one victim. When people respond to allegations by supporting the abuser and doubting the survivor, it further silences others who have yet to speak out.

Clergy sexual abuse is not an affair; pedophilia is not about struggling with difficult circumstances; molesting adolescents is not about a struggling marriage. Such things must be called by their right names—the abuser needs to be held responsible for his/her abusive behavior.

“Inappropriate behavior” might describe cracking loud jokes in a library, but it should never be used as a euphemism for clergy sexual abuse. Vague language minimizes the grooming, betrayal, and trauma survivors endure. Call it what it is: abuse, not merely “inappropriate.”
